Neerja Palisetty
Her Company
Sutrakaar Creations was set up in Jaipur in 2017 to encourage experimental handloom weaving. They handcraft eco-textile creations with paper and natural materials. Their products are socially and environmentally conscious and embody vibrance, edginess, and sophistication, pioneering a systematic transformation to the definition of luxury fashion. Today, paper waste contributes to being one of the third largest pollutants on Earth, and Sutrakaar’s aim is to transform as much of this waste as possible into beautiful products. They follow the four Rs in their creations - reduce, reuse, recycle, and respect. Sutrakaar’s products include fashion accessories like clutches, sling bags and tote bags, home decor items like lampshades, tapestries, rugs, carpets and cushion covers, stationery products like diaries, sketchbooks and pen stands, and jewelry including neckpieces, earrings, wrist bands and many more.
Her Journey
Neerja’s interest in this space was inspired by her family who are weavers from Ponduru, a village in Andhra Pradesh. Her strong family roots with a legacy and tradition of 400 years of weaving have played a vital role in shaping her vision for her career. Post-graduation, she spent 17 years working as a merchandiser at Tirupur in Tamil Nadu and also as a design educator in Coimbatore and later, Jaipur. Her depth of experience in the fashion industry empowered Neerja to branch out on her own and create a sustainable design studio, which via upcycling, allows her to also do her bit for the planet.
